JK shares her thoughts on what 2020 was like for the hospitality industry – and how exciting 2021 will be!

What a year it’s been for the events and hospitality industry! It’s been a right struggle for us all – even those businesses who have successfully pivoted and added online events to their repertoire.

This time last year I was convinced 2020 was going to be a great year! The diary was full with client events, I was nominated for Cheshire Business Woman of the Year and I was featured in both Cheshire Life and Living Edge as part of their inspirational women’s features.

Then lockdown hit, the business came to a crashing standstill and I had a heart attack!

But not one to be fazed, I took a deep breath, rallied myself and got myself online. I focussed on being positive, supportive and THERE on social media, helping others to keep their heads up and not allow the situation to be overwhelming.

I ran free meetings with the aim of saying “yes it’s challenging but let’s get through this together” and then in September I got back into the networking game and kick started my networking group JK Business Club, which was such a positive thing for me to do.

Many times I wanted to hide with overwhelming imposter syndrome and feeling like everyone else was doing better than me, but I refused to let that be the way. And it’s really paid off!

So what’s happening in 2021…

Since the start of 2021 I’ve joined networking group networx4business to run 4 of their 14 meetings, which helps me help others – and that’s what my aim of the year is. To give back as much as I can as an expression of thanks to everyone who has helped me over the last 12 months…as altruistic as that may sound.

In March 2021 I was featured in Cheshire Life’s “Wonder Women – our business superheroines” feature along with 29 other amazing business women – I am looking forward to our drinks evening where we can celebrate each other and learn about each other.

I was reminded recently to stop waiting for the end of lockdown before putting my “events head” back on and since then I’ve organised :

  • A ladies event to celebrate International Women’s Day
  • A book launch for a newly published author
  • A drinks evening for “business superheroines” featured in Cheshire Life
  • A REAL LIFE drinks evening with a small group of Chester business leaders
  • Another real life event for inspirational business women
  • I’m working with an artist to get his work into more art galleries and to receive more commissions
  • A black-tie champagne charity night – this has been in the diary a while having been cancelled a year ago!
  • A number of small face to face events to encourage confidence and get businesses back connecting with each other in a relaxed and informal setting
  • And not forgetting the 4 networking meetings I run fortnightly with networx4business, which will include face to face/hybrid meetings as restrictions allow
  • And I’m also super excited to have joined the Support Committee of Chester BID, working alongside others to make Chester a retail, business and leisure destination of choice.

I am so thrilled to still be here, doing a job I love in a business I created with amazing people around me…the future is looking very bright indeed for JK!

We may only be in March but there’s so much going on already and having had a pretty quiet year I am absolutely ready for it!

Bring it on!
